If you’re getting ready to buy a new copier for your San Jose office, understand what you’re signing up for before you get locked into a contract of any kind. If you don’t read the “fine print,” you can’t blame the copier company for what’s there in black and white. Know these points:

1. Many leases have a statement that allows rates to be increased over time. The rate listed may be over 10 percent, so review it carefully. Ask them to remove the statement from the contract.

2. If the company is unwilling to remove the built-in rate increase, it’s time to negotiate. Don’t fall for the “it says we can, not that we will” line. They will raise the rates if they can. Bargain for a lower rate increase.

3. Beware of consumable install charges. They’re astronomical and can be avoided by taking a few minutes to learn how to do it yourself. It’s not a difficult task.
