Automatic Copier Lease Rollovers

Automatic Copier Lease Rollovers

So, you have a 5-year lease for your copier and it’s getting close to the end of the term. You can’t wait to end it so you can send this annoying copier back since it’s literally caused you headache after headache over the last few months. The contract ends on the last day of the month, but it’s only the 4th. You feel great about giving this copier the ‘boot’. Then, you open your mail and notice a bill from your San Jose copier leasing company that’s set for another three months. Now what?

In nearly every lease, there’s a provision that allows for continued billing unless you give the said company an official written notice that you plan on returning their equipment at the end of the term on the lease; no later than 45 days prior to its expiration and no sooner than 90 days prior to the expiration of the current lease.

This simple but expensive mistake will probably cost your firm about $500 – $1000 and will likely infuriate you as well. There’s virtually nothing more the copier company can do unless they’re actually the ones carrying the lease. If your copier is presently under lease, carefully read the contract to determine what they require from you and proceed to take care of it immediately.
